The Gorton Advent Windows project is working with local schools, youth groups, churches and business to create a new Christmas experience for our community through December 2023. Gorton has a special community feel and we want to enhance that.
Each day from December 1st to December 24th a new Nativity picture will appear in a window, somewhere in Gorton. The pictures will be like the windows of an Advent calendar – except the calendar will be all over our community, in the windows of local shops and businesses.
We want to promote local businesses, especially small independent businesses that are the life-blood of our community. We want to showcase the artistic talent of local children and young people. And we want to revive the true spirit of Christmas in our community by finding a new way to tell the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus.
The pictures have been created by the children and young people of Gorton. We had lots of pictures submitted from children in the five participating schools: Abbey Hey, Old Hall Drive, Sacred Heart, St Francis, and St James. The twenty-four pictures have been selected to tell the Christmas story.
We’re still finalising which shops and businesses will display the pictures. If you’re in a shop or business in Gorton and you could display one of the pictures – follow this link .
The idea behind Gorton Advent windows comes from Trinity Baptist Church, a local church based in Wellington Street that is committed to the well-being of our community. The Church is working with various agencies in our community – schools, churches, businesses, community leaders – to promote this project for the good of all.
The project has also been supported by Connecting Communities at Christmas, a project of Forever Manchester.
